Obituary for Mr. Bruce D. Werley

Bruce D. Werley, 82, of Kutztown, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023, in Lehigh Valley Inpatient Hospice, Allentown, after complications from a fall he had while visiting Punta Cana for his and his wife's 30th wedding anniversary in January. He was the loving husband of Karen R. (Kunkel) Werley whom he married on January 26, 1993.

 

Born in Kutztown, Bruce was a son of the late Herbert J. and Verna M. (Wolfe) Werley, and was a 1958 graduate of Kutztown Area High School. After his graduation, Bruce honorably and faithfully served his country in The United States Navy. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, Bruce began working for the former Bethlehem Steel Company for four years. He then was employed as a Clerk by The United States Postal Service, working at the Kutztown Post Office for over 30 years until his retirement in November, 1998.

 

Bruce was a faithful member of Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, Kutztown, where he served as a former Elder and Deacon of the Consistory as well as a former Sunday school teacher. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the East Penn Golf League for 42 years as well as Rich Maiden Golf Course for 25 years. Bruce was a Little League Baseball coach for several years for the K.Y.A.A. in Kutztown. He was also a member and past President of Kutztown Lions Club, where he also was a past zoning and region Chairperson. He enjoyed traveling, watching his grandchildren's sporting events, and was an avid Duke basketball fan.

 

In addition to his wife of 30 years, Karen, Bruce is survived by his three children, Shawn B., husband of Mary Pat (Markowitz) Werley, West Chester, Travis D. Werley, Kempton, and Chad G. Werley, widower of Rebecca (Borish) Werley, Limerick; three step-children, Patrick D., husband of Tamara (Bergstrom) Fitzgerald, Kutztown, Matthew E., husband of Sara (Masenheimer) Fitzgerald, New Tripoli, and Jill K. Fitzgerald, Kutztown; and eight grandchildren, Evan, Carey, Molly, Joshua, Grant, Jade, Nolan and Henry.

 

Along with his parents, Bruce was predeceased by his brothers, Lee, Jay, Charles and William; and sisters, Geraldine, Jane, June, Doris, Nancy and Betty.

 

A memorial service to celebrate and honor Bruce's life will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, 47 S. Whiteoak Street, Kutztown, with The Reverend Kim L. Kline Adamson officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the church (Entrance and Parking Lot in Rear). Military Honors will conclude services at the church.
