The Life of Richard Morris

Richard (“Rick”) Morris, husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, friend, mentor, and mensch was born in Burlington, VT, spent his formative years in Bridgeport, CT, and adopted Philadelphia, PA, as his home, died on February 10, 2023.

Rick was an avid runner, hiker, biker, and basketball player.  He loved being above the tree line. He relished long walks on the beach and savored sunsets almost as much as sunrises.  In high school, he ran track and was a member in the band and choir, as well as the drama and debate clubs. In college, Rick majored in English Literature where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa at his beloved UConn. He earned an MBA in Finance from the University of Bridgeport as a lifetime member Beta Gamma Sigma.  Throughout his life, Rick loved music and enjoyed dancing.  Always up for a new venture, he switched from playing the clarinet to strumming the guitar and learned to wiggle to a waltz.

Rick was curious and inquisitive, thus inspiring his passion for learning.  He regularly audited courses at the University of Pennsylvania, streamed lectures from One Day University and Wondrium, and attended online workshops and seminars offered by 92NY. He was a lover of words and as a result was a voracious reader, exceptional writer, and imaginative poet.

Professionally, Rick was an Information Technology executive and management consultant with a background in information technology-enabled strategic solutions.  He specialized in the practice of IT alignment with business practices such as organizational development, investment strategy, strategic planning and technology planning.  In addition to extensive U.S. based travel, Rick’s career took him worldwide to most of Europe and a large part of South America.

In quasi-retirement, Rick was an educator, mentor and advisor.  He dedicated his energies to the Fox School of Business designing curricula, teaching classes, and advising and mentoring promising entrepreneurs.  Former students still connect to seek his advice, guidance, and to celebrate their successes.  One mentee recently described Rick as an outstanding model of professionalism, dedication, kindness, and integrity.

Rick will be profoundly missed by his wife, Helen (née Dugan); his children, Scott (Ria), and Jessica; his grandson, Andreas; his siblings Stan (Lynn), and Jill (Lester); along with his extended family and friends.  When asked to characterize Rick, his family and closest friends most often express familiar sentiments: loving, thoughtful, engaged, and intelligent.

A memorial service will be celebrated on March 26.  If you wish to honor Rick’s memory, please make a donation to the International Myeloma Foundation.
